On 27th November 2007 a presentation was made to Parkham Parish Council by Peter Willes of Parkham Farms, ADAS (recently privatised government agency) and Keith Apps of POWER Ltd on proposals to site two wind turbines near Sedborough Farm in the beautiful Yeo Valley.

The planning application has now been submitted: 1/0242/2008/FUL and can be viewed on Torridge District Council Planning website.

Local residents are very concerned about the impact these turbines will have on the community and environment of Parkham. These residents have formed the Parkham Parish Conservation Association (PPCA).

The PPCA state that whilst they are not opposed to renewable energy and low carbon energy technologies, they believe that there are more efficient methods of generating electricity than the use of wind turbines, and that generous government subsidies are encouraging developers to pursue wind turbines developments, rather than alternative renewable energy resources.

PPCA want to help preserve North Devon’s natural beauty and they question the industrialisation of our countryside.

Parkham to get parish referendum on wind turbine application

The parish of Parkham, North Devon, has successfully used the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972 to initiate a referendum asking electors their opinion on a private application by Parkham Farms Ltd to build two wind turbines in the vicinity. The date for the referendum is Thursday, April 24, 2008, when parishioners can vote on the question:
"Do you believe that the Sedborough proposal (1/0242/2008/FUL) before Torridge District Council to build two wind turbines, each with an overall height of 100m, in the Yeo Valley and approximately 1.1 mile (1.8km) from the village of Parkham should be rejected?"
The motion to initiate the referendum was passed at a parish meeting in Allardice Hall on March 22, 2008. Of the 57 attendees, 42 parish electors voted in favour and none against.

The call for a referendum was initiated by Parkham Parish Conservation Association (PPCA). PPCA chairman Garry Jennings says: "It is important that the community is able to express its opinion about a project as controversial as the proposed wind farm. The referendum enables parishioners to make their feelings known.

"Whilst the PPCA is not opposed to renewable energy, we believe an industrial  development on the scale proposed at Sedborough Farm is totally inappropriate for the beautiful rural area in which we all live and work. The size of the whirling turbine blades makes them more prominent than pylon lines or grain silos. The proposed turbine development at Sedborough will be a visual intrusion and a desecration of our natural countryside, one of Devon’s biggest assets. Wind farms are already planned to ‘necklace’ our two national parks in Devon, Dartmoor and Exmoor.

"Noise generated by these industrial scale monstrosities is a particular concern. There have been many cases where people’s lives have been ruined by the low frequency noise the turbines generate.
"Wind turbines are not effective energy producers. In order to reduce our carbon footprint we must conserve energy and not just produce it by another method.  There is little point in just being carbon neutral. We all need to be innovative regarding our carbon foot print and not just follow the herd."
